Israel Research Forum at Sydney University
The Office of Deputy Vice-Chancellor, International hosted the University of Sydney- Israel Research Partnership Forum: “Shared Challenges, Future Solutions” on 31 October 2011. The Forum brought together academics from the University of Sydney and leading Israeli institutions to discuss research innovations in key thematic areas including medicine; water, food and agriculture; pedagogy of teaching second languages and Dead Sea Scrolls; energy and information technology. The aim of the Forum was to acknowledge and develop new research collaborations in areas of mutual national and global concern for more details
Israeli Professor of the Israel Institute of Technology has been designated the winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry

Professor Daniel Shechtman of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology has been designated the winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2011 for his discovery of quasicrystals – a new form of matter that has become a major subject field for physicists, materials scientists, mathematicians, and crystallographers.
Shechtman, who was born in Tel Aviv in 1941, had previously been awarded the Israel Prize in Physics in 1998 and the Wolf Prize in Physics a year later.
He discovered the Icosahedral Phase of crystals aluminum transition metal alloys in 1982.
Shechtman is the tenth Israeli to win the Nobel Prize. The most recent awardee was Prof. Ada Yonath of the Weizmann Institute who won the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for her work on the ribosome.  to read more

New Technologies for Australian Mining Sector

The past decade has seen an increasing number of challenges faced by the large mining companies worldwide.  There is a focused debate on the need to shift modern mining to a more sustainable framework to be environmentally friendly. Other challenges faced by the mining companies are the effect of the mine on the Communities next to it, Geological issues, Manpower OH&S and Geopolitical concerns.

General Motors and Yissum signed a research collaboration framework 

Yissum Research Development Company Ltd., the technology transfer company of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, announced that it has signed a research collaboration framework agreement with General Motors. Under the terms of the agreement, General Motors will fund research projects of interest led by Hebrew University researchers, and in return will be granted a right of first offer for procuring an exclusive license to use any invention or product that will result from the sponsored research.

 Microsoft to invest in Technion ecommerce center

The Microsoft Research (MSR) division plans to invest $1.5 million over the next five years in a joint research program with the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. Prof. Moshe Tennenholtz of the William Davidson Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Management will head the project.

The center will promote research in artificial intelligence, games theory, computer science, economics, and psychology and their applications in e-commerce.
